UW-Whitewater looks to claim 2011 tailgating title!

I came across the following note in Keith McMillan’s latest Around the Nation column on D3football.com.

Quote - D3football.com’s Around the Nation wants to settle, once and for all, which is best tailgate in Division III. The championship will be held at the Stagg Bowl this season, and the invitees are Bridgewater (Stone Station), St. John’s (Stiftungsfest), Franklin (no snazzy name that I’m aware of) and any other school who thinks its pregame festivities can go toe to toe with the best.

Hello! What is the first places you think about when talking tailgating at a football game? Lambeau Field and Camp Randall Stadium in Madison – right? The Packers and Badgers aren’t the only great tailgate venues in Wisconsin. Ask any fan from a visiting team and they will tell you that the tailgating at Perkins Stadium in Whitewater is an amazing experience.

Tailgating prior to a Warhawk football game at the Perk is a “must attend” event for every Division III football fan in the country. Honestly – if I’m lying, I’m dying!!!

As far as taking the Perkins Stadium tailgate on the road? Been there – done that for the past six seasons. Whitewater fans love Carey Harveycutter and the good people in Salem, Virginia in charge of the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl!

But, wait, you say: What if my team doesn’t make it to the Stagg Bowl? Come anyway! That’s why we’re starting the planning now, in September. Forget that holiday party and the lame fruitcake you’re going to get re-gifted. Come get some serious grub and watch the nation’s two best teams go at it.

Now let’s sweeten the pot. ATN is seeking a title sponsor to help defray the costs of travel and buying food. The participants can decide if the money will be winner-take-all or split evenly, in the D-III spirit of community. We’ll also need official tasters to be judges.

E-mail your interest to keith.mcmillan@d3sports.com and put “tailgate” in the subject line.
