From the desk of UW-Whitewater football head coach Lance Leipold...
On behalf of the UW-Whitewater football program I would like to encourage your membership and participation in the UW-Whitewater Warhawk Quarterback Club. It is our commitment to provide a family atmosphere for our players, to help them develop personally and to continue our level of championship play.
The recent success of our program is well documented. We also talk about our tradition and our program being “POWERED BY TRADITION”. As the head coach it is my opinion that the Quarterback Club is the Power behind the Tradition! Thanks in no small part to the contributions and volunteer efforts of the Quarterback Club, we enjoy some of the finest facilities, equipment, and fan atmosphere in Division III Football. Maintenance of this status and achievement of our future goals would be difficult without these efforts.
As we all know, operating a football program with 100 student-athletes is a difficult task today with increasing operational costs and technological needs. Your participation at any level ensures opportunities for our players to grow in all aspects of their lives and become the type of young men UW-Whitewater can be proud of. Together we can continue the outstanding tradition of Warhawk Football.
You can make a difference and help sustain the level of excellence that Warhawk Football has achieved and that we all enjoy. Please join the UWW Warhawk Quarterback Club TODAY! Your contribution is tax-deductible if your check is made payable to the UW-Whitewater Foundation and will be used exclusively for UWW Football projects. If this is not a concern, your check may be made payable to: Whitewater Quarterback Club.
The 2011 Warhawks look forward to seeing you at Perkins Stadium this fall. Thank you very much for your support.

Meet UFC lightweight fighter Anthony “Showtime” Pettis at August 12th Cure 54 Fundraiser for Art Gutierrez
The Cure 54 Foundation is pleased to announce that mixed martial arts (MMA) fans will be able to meet XYIENCE team athlete and UFC lightweight fighter Anthony “Showtime” Pettis in conjunction with the Cure 54 raffle-auction for Art Gutierrez, the former UW-Whitewater student-athlete who is currently battling stage-3 colo-rectal cancer.
Pettis, a Milwaukee native and fan favorite, will be signing autographs at the New Ale House in New Berlin (16000 West Cleveland Avenue, New Berln, Wis.)on Friday, Aug. 12, 2011 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
The event coincides with UFC® on Versus 5: that takes place Sunday, Aug. 14 at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee that will feature Pettis’ teammate Dan “The Outlaw” Hardy facing Chris Lytle in a welterweight bout. It will be the first UFC event hosted in Milwaukee.
Pettis (11-2-0) is a third-degree black belt in taekwondo who started his martial arts career at the age of 5. He captured the World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) Lightweight title in December 2010. Since the UFC and WEC merged in late 2010, he is the last fighter to hold that title.
In addition to his WEC title, Pettis’ has earned accolades as 2010 Breakthrough Fighter of the Year from Sherdog, an MMA news source. He also earned WEC bonuses for Knockout of the Night, Submission of the Night and Fight of the Night. Pettis quickly gained a huge fan following for his pizzazz both inside and outside of the octagon, earning him the nickname “Showtime.” During his 2010 WEC title fight, Pettis performed a unique move and coined the “Showtime Kick” by using the cage as a lateral springboard to launch a roundhouse kick to his opponent’s face in the final minute of the fight. That moment was recognized by ESPN as a 2010 Top 10 Highlight Reel. It was also featured on CNN and has been viewed over two million times on YouTube.

Voices Random Thoughts on a Wednesday morning
• Hawks report for 2011 training camp on August 13th. In the words of New York Jets linebacker Bart Scott – CAN’T WAIT.
• I can’t get enough of the frenzy following the end to the NFL lockout. Five months of work being condensed into five days. Now that is what I’m talking about!
• My new status as a Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame member will allow me to attend Green Bay Packers training camp this coming Monday.
• Former UW-Whitewater head coach Bob Berezowitz and I will be making the trip Monday afternoon. I’ll be staying close to Brez on the sideline because he’ll have all the contacts with the GB coaching staff. It will make me feel like Chris Mortensen or John Clayton of ESPN!
• As I reported earlier this morning – Lane Olson is still waiting for a call from an NFL team wanting to sign him to an undrafted free agent contract.
• Attention NFL general managers – if you are looking for a player to be the soul of your special teams kick and punt coverage unit – sign Lane Olson! The guy is an animal on the field, just the kind of player you want on special teams.
• Now that I have “retired” as color analyst on KOOL 106.5 UW-Whitewater football game broadcasts I am having a blast putting together upgrades to Warhawkfootball.com.
• My Web technician, Bob Foerster of KC Computers in Whitewater is busy finishing-up the additions I’m putting up on Warhawkfootball.com this summer.
• Look for the new Warhawk SmugMug Photo Gallery and HawkTube Video links to be on-line by August 10th.
• My sincere apology to my good friend Pike Teipner. He celebrated his birthday earlier this month and I was invited to his birthday party at the Whitewater Country Club and Spa. I had a total “brain-fart” and forgot to attend the party. No excuses – I screwed up. Sorry Pike.
• And to wrap this edition up – hopefully you all are feeling better than me. I’m suffering from a summer cold complete with air conditioning nasal issues during the heat wave. I must say, living on chicken noodle soup and Nyquil isn’t that bad.
• Go Hawks!

Lane Olson still hoping for a shot in an NFL camp
Tuesday morning NFL teams were allowed to sign undrafted free agents to contracts for the first time since the NFL Lockout ended Monday.
UW-Whitewater linebacker Lane Olson spent much of the Tuesday with friends playing golf at H.F. Johnson Park Golf Course in hometown of Racine while waiting for a call from his agent Mitch Chargo that an NFL team wanted to sign him to a free agent contract.
Olson told Gery Woelfel of the Racine Journal-Times that he admittedly was a basket case waiting for word that an NFL team wanted his services.
To read the entire Journal-Times story CLICK HERE
Here is my take on Lane playing at the NFL level.
His Pro Day workout last March at the McClain Facility in Madison was simply amazing.
Woelfel wrote the day following Olson's Pro Day workout in front of NFL scouts...
Invited to Wisconsin's "Pro Day" in March, Olson raised the eyebrows of NFL officials in attendance, including Packers general manager Ted Thompson.
Olson fashioned some staggering numbers during his audition - numbers that rank among the best for draft-eligible safeties: a 4.3-second 40, 29 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press and an NBA-like 38½ inch vertical jump.
Olson, who played outside linebacker at Whitewater but will need to play strong safety at the pro level, knew it was imperative to wow the NFL scouts, who likely had preconceived opinions on him.
Much like Woelfel, I've reported from a number of NFL training camps over the past several years including producing and hosting the then Goetz Radio Netowrk Titletown Report for several years.
A matter-of-fact, I'll be at Green Bay Packers training camp this coming Monday.
I also attended the St. Louis Rams training camp when for Warhawk Derek Stanley was returning kicks and playing wide reciever for the Rams.
I travelled to Washington D.C. to watch former UWW tight end Pete Schmitt after he signed an undrafted free agent contract with the Redskins. From all reports, Pete was on a fast track to make the Skins' regular season roster before suffering a shoulder injury late in training camp.
I'm still mystified that Justin Beaver was not signed to an undrafted free agent contract after impressing NFL scouts, coaches and general managers at his Pro Day workout in 2008 in Madison.
Justin was invited to the Green Bay Packers rookie camp following the 2008 NFL draft and the prevailing opinion was that the Packers would sign him. They didn't and that was a head sratcher for me.
I travelled to Regina, Saskatchewan (Canada) to report on Beaver's attempt to earn a regular season roster spot with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL.
All the talk I heard from Roughrider sources during my training camp trip was how talented Beaver was. The football played in the CFL is much different than football "American style." Only three downs in a pass-happy league.
To his credit, Justin spent the year on the Roughrider's practice squad.
I remember him telling me during my training camp visit that "if it doesn't work out for me here in Canada I will be very happy to return home to get on with my teaching career.
He did just that and is making the same impact in his teaching and coaching position at Jefferson High School as he did on the football field as a UW-Whitewater Warhawk.
It is a "meat wagon" mentality when NFL teams put together a roster. It will never chance.
Here's hoping Lane gets that call today!

Nationally recognized Kohl's Kicking Camps have UW-Whitewater as its home base
The UW-Whitewater football team doesn’t open its 2011 preseason practice until August 13th but over the weekend over 400 kickers, punters, and long-snappers from around the country descended on the Whitewater campus.
The athletes were attending the three-day Kohl’s National Elite Kicking Camp.
Known as one of the premier kicking camps in the country, UW-Whitewater and Perkins Stadium has served as the home base since its inception back in 1996.
Former UW-Whitewater student-athletes, Jeff Schebler, Nick Croak and Kevin Garvoille excelled on the field and now are teaching their respective skills as part of the Kohl Kicking Camps.
Jeff Schebler (2006-09) ended his college career as the all-time kick scoring leader for all divisions of the NCAA. The Davenport, Iowa native finished his career with 470 points, surpassing the NCAA record of 433, set by Art Carmody at the University of Louisville in 2004-07.
Schebler earned All-American honors in each of his four seasons at UW-Whitewater. He is the first UWW football player to accomplish the feat.
Schebler, who is currently employed as a Credit Analyst First Citizens State Bank, continues to serve as a camp counselor and mentor for Kohl’s Kicking Camps.
Nick Croak (2004-07) was the Warhawks’ punter when Schebler arrived at Whitewater in 2006. Croak also made quite a name for himself as a Warhawk. The one-time Kohl’s Camper was a three-time All-WIAC punter and owns the conference career punting record by nearly 3000 yards.
Nick’s attention to detail and expert coaching makes him one of the best young coaches in the nation. Croak is employed by Kohl’s Kicking Camp as a Team Leader.
Kevin Garvoille has coached at Kohl's for 7 years and has led multiple Kohl's snapping events around the country. The former UW-Whitewater “long-snapper” is Kohl's Lead Snapping Coach and continues to train multiple BCS level snappers each year. Kevin is considered one of the most highly respected snapping coaches in the United States.
UW-Whitewater’s special teams play, highlighted by its kicking and punting, is a major reason why UW-Whitewater has captured the WIAC title for the past six seasons, advanced to the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl for six straight years, and captured the NCAA Division III National Championship in 2007, 2009 and 2010.
UW-Whitewater’s name growing beyond borders
(Editor's Note: The following story written by Kevin Hoffman was published in Monday's Janesville Gazette)
WHITEWATER — UW-Madison casts a big, red shadow across southern Wisconsin, but the success of UW-Whitewater athletics is helping the school step into the light and attract an increasing number of out-of-state students, school officials said.
More students from outside Wisconsin are finding their way to the small, rural community, and campus officials give some of the credit to the school’s athletic successes.
“There’s no doubt about it,” said Paul Plinske, athletics director at UW-Whitewater. “What (students) are finding is we have outstanding academic programs, we have a large campus in the state system, and because of our Division III athletes and the success we’re having, we’re drawing in those students.”
Chancellor Richard Telfer said out-of-state applications for freshmen nearly doubled over the last four to five years. As of June, the university had enrolled 740 freshmen from other states for the fall semester. Last year at that time, there were about 620.

College Football 2011: 10 Coaches Who Could Get a Win If Life Depended on It
A very interesting off-season feature story written by longtime college football writer Tom Perry over the summer ranking the top-10 college football coaches in America that he would want on the sideline if you needed to “bet your life” on winning one big game.
The Top 10 list includes all NCAA Division 1 BCS coaches with the exception of one – Lance Leipold at UW-Whitewater.
Perry writes: When Lance Leipold took over the Warhawks in 2007, Whitewater was a great program with a proud tradition. However, the Warhawks could not get past Mount Union in the Division III Championship game. In four years, Leipold has turned the tables on the Purple Raiders, and Whitewater has won three of the last four Stagg Bowls.
In announcing his list Perry writes: No game is really a life or death situation, but sometimes it just feels like it; you want "your" team to win so bad that a loss is unacceptable. As the pressure rises, some players rise to the occasion— think Vince Young in the BCS Championship against USC. He was straight money in that game. The same can be said for coaches; the higher the stakes, the better they prepare and perform. Is the coach of your team someone you would bet your life on to win one big game?
The following is Perry’s Top 10 list of coaches he has chosen if you needed to “bet your life” on winning one big game:
1. Chris Peterson, Boise State
2. Nick Saban, Alabama
3. Gene Chizik, Auburn
4. Les Miles, LSU
5. Kirk Ferentz, Iowa
6. Jimbo Fisher, Florida State
7. Steve Sarkisian, Washington
8. Gary Patterson, TCU
9. Kyle Whittingham, Utah
10. Lance Leipold, Wisconsin-Whitewater

Donations still being sought for Cure 54 Fundraiser to assist Art Gutierrez's battle with cancer
Hey Warhawk Nation, there is still time to donate auction items to the Cure 54 Foundation Fundraiser on August 12th at the New Ale House in New Berlin. Proceeds from the event will go directly into a fund for former UW-Whitewater student-athlete Art Gutierrez. The Milwaukee native played linebacker on the Wahawks 1997 and 1998 WIAC championship teams. Art earned 1st Team All-Conference recognition in 1998, his senior season.
The former U-Dub-Dub linebacker is currently waging the biggest battle of his life -the battle against cancer.
The fundraising effort is being organized by a group of Art’s UW-Whitewater teammates and they are seeking auction and raffle items for the August 12th fundraiser at the New Ale House.

Warhawks itching to get back on the field
By far the biggest question I have been asked over the past couple of weeks is: ”When do the Warhawks open training camp?”
The answer is Saturday, August 13th.
Checking out my Facebook page I notice the excitement the players have for getting back to work.
Posts like; can’t wait, working to get ready, already to go, etc.
I had to chuckle yesterday when defensive end John Lorenzo posted the following from his home in Hialeah, Florida
Running’ Speed Drills =))))) — at South Beach. "Plough Deep While Sluggards Sleep".. Working hard to achieve what I want, SUCCESS is my only option. #NoExcuses!
BTW - Lorenzo started his college football career at Mount Union!
Me thinks the team is ready to get “back at it” for another run at the WIAC title and return to the NCAA Division III playoffs.
In the words of New York Jets linebacker Bart Scott – Can’t Wait!

Where are people reading this blog located?
Thanks to all of you that have chosen to click onto voiceseyeonfootball.blogspot.com as one of your sources for Warhawk football news and information.
The blog software allows me to find out how many are currently, or have recently, logged onto my blog.
Every so often I check the statistic of where are those viewing the blog coming from.
At 3:30 p.m., Wednesday afternoon (July 20), I checked out exactly where my “peeps” were “clicking in” from.
384 were viewing voiceseyeonfootball.blogspot.com from the United States. The reminder of the locations made me scratch my head. Germany (18), Ukraine (10), Hungary (2), Latvia (2), Russia (2), Indonesia (1), Nigeria (1) and Singapore (1).
I was really excited when I noticed the number of countries listed. Then I wondered if the one viewer each from Indonesia, Nigeria and Singapore may be potential “spammers”?
Hey, in this business, each “clicker” is good!
I wonder how you say GO WARHAWKS in Nigerian?

Bukowski leaves UW-Whitewater for post at U.S. Naval Academy
Dr. Bruce Bukowski, a longtime member of the UW-Whitewater football family, was named Director of the Center for Academic Excellence at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland this summer.
Bukowski served as the Director of Academy Advising and Exploration Center at the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater since 2002 and prior to that served as a tenured faculty member in the Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Coaching Department since 1986.
“We’re thrilled to have Dr. Bukowski join us at the academy and lead our Class of 1963 Center for Academic Excellence,” said Naval Academy Academic Dean and Provost Dr. Andrew Phillips. “Dr. Bukowski has significant experience in developing and leading a nationally recognized and award winning academic center in Wisconsin, and he has a background and leadership style that is a great ‘fit’ for our institution.”
“Bu” was hired by Bob Berezowitz as the Defensive Coordinator at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. In his 16 years as the Defensive Coordinator the Warhawks record was 106-44-3 with 6 WSUC Championships, 3 NCAA Playoff appearances and on 5 different occasions the Warhawks lead the WSCU in total defense.
Bukowski was close to the UWW football program throughout his tenure on campus. Most recently serving as a scoreboard operator game days at Perkins Stadium.

South Squads sweep Saturday's WFCA All-Star games in Oshkosh
(Editor's Note: The following story is reprinted for the WFCA All-Star Game story that appears in the Sunday, July 17th edition of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel)
Division 4-7: South 21, North 19
Mykaell Bratchett said he enjoyed playing football for a good cause Saturday - a cause so good, in fact, it will someday become his life.
The 6-foot-2, 230-pound defensive end from The Hope School helped lead the South to a 21-19 victory over the North.
"The football field was always the place I could go when my mind was troubled," Bratchett said. "Now, football is the gateway to my future."
That future will begin this fall at UW-Whitewater, where Bratchett plans to major in biology. The next step will be medical school. Bratchett's career goal is to become an emergency room physician.
"My little brother, Demonta, is my pride and joy," Bratchett said. "When he was younger, he spent a lot of time in the hospital. I felt helpless during those times. I figure the best way I can help kids is to actually become a doctor."
Demonta is now 16 and healthy. He plans to play high school football this fall.
Bratchett and fellow defensive lineman Josh Paape (Ozaukee) were given a difficult assignment - to help contain multitalented North quarterback Matt O'Connell (Clear Lake).
O'Connell passed for 217 yards and rushed for 94 more, but his attempted two-point conversion pass was intercepted at the goal line by South linebacker Alex Wallace (Brodhead-Juda) with 1 minute, 4 seconds left.
"The talent level out here was ridiculous," the 6-3, 265-pound Paape said. "In high school games, sometimes I would just tower over the kid across from me. Here, every guy across from me was one of the best football players in the state."
Paape is the second player in his school's history to be selected for the game. He spent much of the day in the North backfield, disrupting and redirecting plays.

Division 1-3: South 30, North 0
Derek Watt was The Associated Press state player of the year in 2010. He signed a letter-of-intent with Wisconsin. He rushed for 1,501 yards and 25 touchdowns. But he had never before intercepted three passes in a game until Saturday.
"I've never done it, and I can only think of one time I've ever even seen it done," Watt said.
The former Pewaukee star's three first-half pickoffs helped the South to a 30-0 victory over the North in the 35th Wisconsin Football Coaches Association All-Star Games.
Watt and Arrowhead's Drew Meyer returned interceptions for touchdowns, and the South defense did not allow the North inside its 20 until the game's final minutes.
14 future UW-Whitewater student-athletes were on the roster of either the Division 1-3 squads or the Division 4-7 squads. The next football action for the recruits is coming up in mid-August when the Warhawks open its 2010 training camp.
All proceeds from the Saturday's All-Star games benefit Children's Hospital of Wisconsin.
Matt Blanchard among best quarterbacks in Division III in 2010, Brekke leads Hawks on play-off run to Division III Title
I spent Saturday evening immersed in the task of crunching UW-Whitewater football individual statistics from last season.
I knew that Matt Blanchard was having an outstanding season prior to fracturing the thumb on his throwing hand in the Hawks regular season finale victory over UW-La Crosse.
I was positive Blanchard was among the national leaders in pass efficiency from game one of the season.
I was flabbergasted when I checked the official WIAC season statistics and Blanchard isn’t even mentioned in any of the quarterback statistics. I’m not sure why since he started all 10 regular season games, leading the Warhawks to back-to-back unbeaten WIAC titles and a record-tying sixth consecutive conference championship.
For the record, the junior out of Lake Zurich, Illinois completed 163 of his 225 passes for 2132 yards, 21 touchdowns and just 1 interception. His passing efficiency rating was.
Again, I am baffled as to why Blanchard statistics were not part included in the WIAC season statistics or the NCAA Division III national statistics.
With Whitewater playing 15 games for a sixth consecutive season – because Blanchard played in just 10 games (entire regular season), his playing in just 66% of the Hawks games may not have met the standard for being included in the final season statistics.
If that is the reason I don’t agree.
Let’s get back to Matt Blanchard on the field.
His statistics place him No. 2 in the 2010 final NCAA Division III quarterback pass efficiency ranking.
2010 Gagliardi Trophy winner – Eric Watt of Trine University - finished No. 1 in pass efficiency completing 197 of 294 for 2874 yards including 33 touchdowns and 6 interceptions and a 182.05 efficiency rankings.
Finishing No. 2 in Division III pass efficiency was Kyle Ray of Franklin University. Ray finished 2010 with a 174.8 passing efficiency rating.
Blanchard’s 181.95 pass efficiency finished a mere point-1-0 of a percentage point behind Watt.
A healthy Blanchard, backed up by Lee Brekke who quarterbacked the Hawks to five straight playoff wins and a second consecutive NCAA Division III Title, keep Whitewater in a very healthy situation at quarterback entering training camp in mid-August.

Voice’s random thoughts heading into a stinkin’ hot weekend
• U-Dub-Dub will have a record fourteen, 2011 recruits participating in Saturday’s Wisconsin Football Coaches Association All-Star games at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium. Four will be participating in Saturday afternoon’s Division 4-7 game. Ten are scheduled to play in Saturday night’s Division 1-3 game
• The Warhawks, including those of you out there in Warhawk Nation, know the importance of playing with that “pound the rock” mentality. After losing four the five starting offensive line to graduation following last December’s NCAA Division III National Championship – the recruitment of offensive lineman was a priority. Saturday afternoon’s Division 4-7 game will have one UWW recruit on the South squad. Thw South O-Line in Saturday night’s Division 1-3 game will be dominated by UWW offensive line recruits. The South squad has four future Hawks on the offensive line with one more listed as a tight end/offensive lineman. Pound the rock baby!!
• There will likely be a strong concern for the health of the All-Stars on Saturday. The teams have just one-week of practice under there belt and the National Weather Service is calling for Saturday’s high temperature in Oshkosh in the low to mid-80s with high humidity. The heat index is expected to be in the lower 90s. If you are going to the game, expect mandatory water breaks, especially during the Division 4-7 game that kicks off at 2 p.m.
• As I indicated yesterday here on the blog, I will be debuting HAWK TUBE on both Voiceseyeonfootball.blogspot.com and Warhawkfootball.com beginning in early August. My plans are to have 3 to 5 minute videos several times a week – including player and coaches interviews, During the season Warhawk fans will be able to view game preview package each Friday, and a complete multi-video recap of each game on Saturday night’s and Sunday.
• The latest edition to the Oh Baby Sports Productions empire will also have an audio only feature entitled Warhawk Football This Week each Wednesday evening beginning August 9th. The show that will be available via a Warhawkfootball.com link will also be available via podcast format on the WFAW/KOOL 106.5 Website.
• I am spending much of my weekend preparing for UWW’s preseason training camp. The team reports for preseason practice on August 12th.
• By the way, I’ll be producing twice-daily Warhawk Training Camp Reports for Gary Douglas at KOOL 106.5. I’ll have more information on program times for you next week. I do know that all the reports will also be available via podcast.
• I’ve had a number of people ask me why I have so many “irons in the fire” just day’s after announcing my retirement after 22 years-plus of being a “Radio Voice” of Warhawk football broadcasts. Now approaching 60 years old I desperately wanted to get some of my new projects “up and running.”
• I sure hope Warhawk Nation will be receptive to the expanded media blitz.
• Oh by the way – there are actually two things will up-stage my Warhawk duties this weekend. My youngest grandson, Jovan Smith, turns four years old and his birthday party with a Pirate and Sponge Bob Square Pants theme, will be held Saturday afternoon at the Madison Children’s Museum. ARRGGG !!! we are going to have a good time.
• Jovan isn’t the only one celebrating a birthday this weekend. The Madison-based, Oscar Mayer Wienermobile is turning 75 on Monday. It was July 18, 1936, that the original Wienermobile vehicle first took to the road. To celebrate, a group of officials from Madison-based Kraft/Oscar Mayer will ring the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange on Monday.
• Have a great weekend everybody and STAY COOL!!

An open letter to Prince Fielder, Brewers' owner Mark Attanasio & GM Doug Melvin
(Photo of Price Fielder and sons Jaden and Haven is courtesy of the Miwaukee Journal-Sentinel)
The Milwaukee Brewers made big headlines during Tuesday night’s Major League Baseball All-Star Game.
Prince Fielder rips a 3-run home run to lead the National League to a 5-1 win over the American League at the 82nd annual Major League All-Star Game at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona.
Right after the game, the Brewers announced they have bolstered the bullpen by acquiring veteran relief pitcher Francisco "K-Rod" Rodriguez and cash from the New York Mets for two minor league players to be named later.
The move by Brewer G.M. Doug Melvin was a definitive statement that his team is “dead serious” about doing what it takes to win the National League Central Division title.
"We're trying to get as many quality pitchers as we can for the last 2½ months of the season," Melvin tells the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "We're trying to get as much quality as we can.”
The “experts” on the national scene are insisting that Fielder is playing his final half-season as a Milwaukee Brewer prior to cashing in as a free agent in the upcoming off-season.
During the 2010-2011 off-season Prince indicated that he hoped Melvin would strengthen the pitching staff. He did.
Tuesday night’s trade made Milwaukee a trading deadline (July 31st) “player” in a move that screams that the Brewers are serious about making a run to the playoffs for a second time since 2008.
If you remember, Melvin made another huge acquisition by trading for C.C. Sabathia at the trading deadline. Sabathia was a major cog in the Brewers run to the MLB playoffs in the second half of 2008.
Attanasio made it clear earlier this season that he will do “everything he can” to re-sign Prince and keep him a Milwaukee Brewer.
Admittedly, Prince will get “big money” from whatever team that eventually signs him.
Attanasio and Melvin surprised everybody by giving Ryan Braun a $105 million, five-year contract extension with the Milwaukee Brewers on in February.
The deal included a mutual option for one additional year worth up to $20 million and is the longest commitment to a player in Brewers franchise history.
This past February the Brewers signed second baseman Rickie Weeks to a four-year, $38.5 million contract with a vesting option that can turn the contract to a franchise-record $50 million.
In my mind, Mark Attanasio is the top owner in Major League Baseball. He “gets it” when talking about commitment to his players and Brewer fans that may top 3-million at Miller Park this season.
Just take a look at the above photo (courtesy of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel) and listening to Prince’s comments on FOX while accepting the All-Star Game MVP trophy Tuesday night that Prince relishes playing in a family-friendly Milwaukee market on a team that is serious about winning now – not as part of a 3-year plan.
Scott Boras is Prince Fielder’s (and K-Rod’s) agent. Boras is well-known for long, often antagonistic contract negotiations.
Prince – if you really enjoy being a member of the Brewers as much as it seems – tell Boras that your first choice will be to remain in Milwaukee if Attanasio and Melvin put serious money with a home team discount.
The nucleus of this team has been together since playing for the then Brewers Class A minor league affiliate in Beloit.
You guys have worked hard to take it to get to the “next level.” Please don’t “jump ship” and stay a Milwaukee Brewer.

Hawks Rob Coe now pitching for St. Paul Saints in the American Association
Just prior to the UW-Whitewater baseball team’s postseason run Rob Coe indicated that he wasn’t sure he was going to get the opportunity to play professional baseball.
Coe not only landed a spot on the St. Paul Saints (Minn) roster, but he was signed as a pitcher.
The Appleton native was signed on June 20, 2010 and has put up outstanding statistics in his first 10 days on the Saints’ pitching staff.
To date – Coe has pitched 7.0 innings in three appearances on the mound. He has given up just 3 hits, has stuck out 4 batters while walking 1. Coe has yet to give up a run and enters tonight’s game with a 0.00.
Coe, who was one of the top catchers at the Division III level, didn’t appear on the mound during his career until midway through his senior season this spring.
Used exclusively in a relief role, Coe pitched 12.1 innings, posting a 0.73 earned run average.
The first team All-WIAC and Midwest Region pick hit .350 during the 2011 season and boasted a .985 fielding percentage that helped him to earn American Baseball Coaches Association All-Midwest Gold Glove Team honors.
By the way - now in the American Association - it isn't Rob Coe - it's ROBERT Coe.
Rusch Earns Membership in prestigious Hampshire Honor Society
UW-Whitewater's Aaron Rusch has earned membership in the National Football Foundation's Hampshire Honor Society. To earn the honor a student athlete must be a starter or significant reserve on his team, have a minimum of a 3.2 (4.0 scale) cumulative grade point average, and must be in the final year of eligibility and meet NCAA graduation progression requirements. The NFF Hampshire Honor Society honors football players from every Division (I, II and III).
Rusch, a four-year starter for the Warhawks, was a finalist for the Gagliardi Trophy and a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy in 2010. He was also named UW-Whitewater Male Senior Athlete of the Year, and was a College Sports Information Directors Second Team Academic All-American. He helped the team to four straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles and national championships in 2007, 2009 and 2010. As a wide receiver and punt returner Rusch forged numerous record book entries, including top ten marks in ten categories in the UW-Whitewater record book and four times in the top five in the WIAC record book.
Rusch, a three-time all-WIAC pick, he became the WIAC’s “poster child” for the NCAA Division III “student-athlete” profile. The Hartford, Wisconsin native was named the WIAC Max Sparger Scholar Athlete for football in 2010. A physical education major, Rusch posted a 3.82 cumulative grade point average, was a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society, a Sigma Alpha Lambda National Leadership and Honors Organization nominee, and a Dean's List honoree every semester. He has also earned a spot on the UW-W Scholar Athlete Award list and was named a Chancellor's Scholar Athlete in April 2011.
