Installation of new lights at Perkins Stadium is delayed

Installation of the new lights at Perkins Stadium will be delayed. Originally scheduled to be installed during the summer break, the state-of-the-art lights are now scheduled to be installed in September or early October.

UW-Whitewater athletic director Paul Plinske indicated Tuesday that he has been assured that the lights will be installed in time for UW-Whitewater’s October 14th, Friday night game vs. UW-Stout at Perkins Stadium.

The reason for a rare Friday night game in the WIAC is the result of the annual Wisconsin State High School marching band competition schedule for Saturday, October 15th at the “Perk.”

The Perkins Stadium lights project was necessitated when the light tower on the northeast corner of Perkins Stadium collapsed during stormy conditions the night the Warhawk football team returned from Salem, Virginia following the team’s 38-28 NCAA Division III national championship victory over Mount Union.

Portable lights (see adjacent photo) were installed earlier this month as a temporary solution of the current lack of lights.

The portable lighting system allowed the already scheduled Wisconsin Lacrosse Federation 2011 Boys' State State Championships to be held at Perkins Stadium the weekend of June 10th.

The Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps is hosting of “The Whitewater Classic” on Thursday, June 30th at UW-Whitewater’s Perkins Stadium, site of the first DCI World Championships in 1972.
