Former UW-Whitewater linebacker Art Gutierrez continues his battle with cancer in Houston, Texas

Former UW-Whitewater linebacker Art Gutierrez's battle with cancer will take him to Houston, Texas next week.

On his facebook page Saturday morning, Art posted the following: Ok folks, just to let you know Mal and I leave for Md Anderson hospital in Houston Sunday morning. Hoping for answers there wish us luck.

The Milwaukee native is battling colo-rectal cancer. It is his second battle within a year with this very aggressive cancer.

In Fiscal Year 2010, more than 105,000 people — about one-third of them new patients have sought the high-quality care that has made MD Anderson so widely respected. There were nearly 10,000 registrants on clinical trials exploring novel treatments, the largest such program in the nation.

“Once a Warhawk – Always a Warhawk” as a group of Art’s f Warhawk football teammates have formed the Cure 54 Foundation.

A major fundraiser will take place on Friday, August 12th at the New Berlin Ale House (16000 West Cleveland Avenue) in New Berlin, WI. The doors will open at 5:00 pm and the live auction will begin at 6:30 pm. Auction items include Sports Memorabilia, Gift Certificates, Weekend Getaways, Golf Packages and much much more.

With the money raised from the C.U.R.E. 54 fundraiser, Art will be able to pay some existing medical bills as well as seek treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, or MD Anderson hospital in Houston, TX. Both of these institutions are regarded as the two best cancer treatment centers in America.

The Cure 54 Foundation is currently seeking organizations or individuals willing to donate sports memorabilia or any other items that can be auctioned or raffled off at this event. Any help you can provide with acquiring sports memorabilia or other items to raffle will be much appreciated. We are also looking for people who are willing to sell or purchase raffle tickets. The raffle ticket is also their ticket to get into the auction on August 12. Lastly, we are seeking people who are willing to make a monetary donation.
