Week Five Game Day Central

The unbeaten UW-Whitewater Warhawks are on the road Saturday to take on winless UW-River Falls at Ramer Field in River Falls.

On paper the game appears to be a mismatch.

In the just-completed Major League Baseball Division Series Philadelphia was a prohibitive favorite over St. Louis, as was the Yankees over the Tigers.

Should I remind you who won the two series?

“We have to keep reminding our players that we're going to get everybody's best shot," Warhawk head coach Lance Leipold said earlier this week. "You can make a team's season, and catapult a program, by having an upset victory.

In last week’s WIAC opener the Hawks got a bit of a “wake-up” call when Platteville was tied with UWW 14-14 at halftime.

"You've got to maintain your focus and stay locked in each and every week. That's a message we constantly remind our players, especially the younger ones."

The Warhawks were reminded of the importance of playing “a week at a time” early in the week on the practice field. The formula to the Hawks’ tremendous success on it’s current 35-game win streak has been a “one game at a time” mentality.

"That's why maintaining that focus is so important, and fortunately for us, we've been able to do that up to this point."

Elsewhere in the WIAC on Saturday….

UW-Oshkosh is at UW-Eau Claire
Both teams enter the game tied with Whitewater at 1 & 1 in the conference and 3 & 1 overall. Both teams have put themselves in great position to emerge as the #2 team in the WIAC, and quite possibly make a run at Whitewater.

UW-Stout travels to UW-Stevens Point
Both teams are 2 & 2 on the season and 0 & 1 in the conference.

In non-conference action

Jamestown (North Dakota) will be in La Crosse to take on the Eagles.
La Crosse is coming off its first win of the season – a dramatic 31-28 win on a last second field goal to give Joel Dettwiler his first win as UWL head coach. Jamestown is playing its second WIAC team this season. Stout beat the Jimmies 19-17 in week-one in Menomonie.
