2010 UW-Whitewater football team something very special

The seniors on the 2010 Warhawk football team are now the most "decorated" in UW-Whitewater history. They are members of THREE NCAA Division III championship teams in four years. Oh, by the way, the "other" season NOT winning the title, the Warhawks finished second in a five-point loss to Mount Union in the 2008 Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl.

The Warhawks opended the season as the preseason No. 1 ranked team in the country. Saturday night the Hawks "ran the table" with its 15th consecutive win for a second season in a row. You think that's easy?

I sat in the lobby of our team hotel following last night's game and was facinated to watch the faces of the players and families celebrating the national championship victory. It spoke volumes on the satisfaction one has after reaching the top of the mountain - it is really what it is all about.

I recall the smile on Chancellor Telfer's face when he was in our press box booth at halftime. To begin the day in Whitewater overseeing commencement exercises, to being 883 miles two hours later to watch his UW-Whitewater football team playing for another national title on national TV via ESPN - I'd say it was a very good day for U-Dub-Dub.

What made the 2010 Warhawks click week after week, after week? An outstanding coaching staff that set the tone immediately following the team's 2009 national championship game making it crystal clear that to win championships is to succeed one day, one practice, one game at a time. Add oustanding senior leadership and that "pound the rock" attitude and it forms the Warhawk reciepe to success.

Congratulations to Lane Leipold who has been named the 2010 D3football.com National Coach of the Year and to Level Coppage named the 2010 National Offensive Player of the Year.

Thanks to KOOL 106.5 for allowing me to be part of the football broadcasting team again this season. It is humbling to be sitting in the "co-pilot's" seat next to Gary Douglas each broadcast. He is the best play-by-pay guy in Division III football!

-Oops, I just got a call saying I'm late for breakfast! More thoughts coming up later.
