Chancellor Richard Telfer and UW-Whitewater football team just spent a dream weekend

What a weekend for the UW-Whitewater football team. What a weekend for UW-Whitewater Chancellor Richard Telfer.

Chancellor Telfer, a huge Warhawk football fan, began his weekend overseeing commencement exercises Saturday morning in the DLK Fieldhouse, caught a flight to Roanoke, Virginia to root on the Warhawks to a second consecutive NCAA Division III national championship. Sunday morning Chancellor Telfer flew home with the team on an NCAA charter flight back to Madison and then a third national championship, welcome-home celebration.

When Telfer walked onto the Williams Center gym floor to speak to the team at Sunday afternoon’s celebration, he held his fists up for the players to see two national championship rings adorning his right hand.

"I've got room for more and, by golly, you earned it," Chancellor Telfer told the team.

Head coach Lance Leipold said this year's seniors are responsible for maintaining motivation through four trips to the bowl.

"They kept up that hunger, that work ethic, that special effort," Leipold said.

Athletic Director Paul Plinske said the seniors can be confident that their group is "one of the best that's ever walked on to this campus."

Over the last four years the UW-Whitewater football team has posted an incredible 57 and 3 record. The team is part of a record six consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships and six consecutive meetings with legendary Division III powerhouse, Mount Union, in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl.

What a weekend for Chancellor Telfer and the UW-Whitewater football team!

Oh by the way, recruiting for 2011 begins this week!
